AN OPPORTUNITY FOR VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES

San Francisco Opera
Final Dress Rehearsal of
“HEART OF A SOLDIER”
Wednesday, September 7, 2011, at 8:00 p.m.
War Memorial Opera House

Pre-Rehearsal Reception 7 – 7:45 p.m in Opera House Main Lobby.

Heart of a Soldier is the story of Rick Rescorla, whose photo appeared on the cover of Joe Galloway’s book “We Were Soldiers Once…and Young” and made into the movie “We Were Soldiers”, starring Mel Gibson.  It tells the story of an incredible man whose military training and experience in multiple combat tours led him to become Head of Security for Morgan Stanley at the World Trade Center, where his courage and bias for action saved 2,700 lives on 11 September 2001.

In support of the San Francisco Veterans Memorial Project, the San Francisco Opera is generously opening its final dress rehearsal for Heart of a Soldier – a true story of war, love, friendship and heroism – to Veterans, their families and guests…FREE OF CHARGE.  The Heart of a Soldier Opera features music by Christopher Theofanidis with words adapted by Donna di Novelli and is an extraordinary new opera about the life of Rick Rescorla.  The world premiere of Heart of a Soldier will take place in the San Francisco Opera House 3 days after this final dress rehearsal.

The San Francisco Veterans Memorial Project represents our community’s commitment to fulfill the 75-year promise to build a Veterans Memorial in the Memorial Court situated between the War Memorial Opera House and Veterans Building.

Please join other Veterans, the San Francisco Opera, War Memorial Board of Trustees and the San Francisco Veterans Memorial Project Committee for this exciting world premiere, and help keep the promise to generations of veterans who have served our nation in the cause of freedom.

The San Francisco Veterans Memorial Site
The San Francisco Veterans Memorial will honor a 75-year promise to our nation’s military veterans by installing a Veterans Memorial in the Memorial Court, located between the War Memorial Veterans Building and Opera House. Landscape architect Thomas D. Church’s original 1920’s vision called for a memorial and the Veterans Memorial Steering Committee is raising private funds for its design, installation and maintenance.
