About the San Francisco Veterans Memorial

The San Francisco Veterans Memorial will honor a 75-year promise to our nation’s military veterans by commemorating their service and sacrifice. Not just today’s veterans—but those who stood in the past and those who have yet to stand.

Our recent national competition yielded three finalists whose design proposals were unveiled for the public on June 8, 2011. In August 2011, we will announce the final selection of a monument that will ensure the legacy of this sacred ground for the education, honor and healing of future generations.

The estimated $2.5 million project will incorporate environmentally responsible design and include an endowment to support ongoing maintenance. $1.8 million has already been secured through a generous $1.5 million grant from the Stephen Bechtel Fund and additional private contributions raised by the San Francisco Veterans Memorial Steering Committee, co-chaired by former Secretary of State George P. Shultz and former Secretary of Defense William J. Perry.

Please join the San Francisco Veterans Memorial Project Committee, War Memorial Board of Trustees, San Francisco Arts Commission, and numerous Veterans organizations serving the Bay Area, to help keep the promise to those who have served our nation in the cause of freedom.

About Media Resources The Memorial Site   Welcome Introduction:
The San Francisco Veterans Memorial Site
The San Francisco Veterans Memorial will honor a 75-year promise to our nation’s military veterans by installing a Veterans Memorial in the Memorial Court, located between the War Memorial Veterans Building and Opera House. Landscape architect Thomas D. Church’s original 1920’s vision called for a memorial and the Veterans Memorial Steering Committee is raising private funds for its design, installation and maintenance.
